PFN to Collaborate with 5 Parties for High-Precision Weather Forecasts During Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan

6 parties to use PFN’s AI-based weather data compression and transmission platform Cumulon to warn Expo visitors and staff of heavy rain showers

This statement is PFN’s summary of the collaboration project jointly announced today in Japanese by NICT, Osaka University, NIED, PFN, RIKEN and MTI.

TOKYO – March 26, 2025 – Preferred Networks, Inc. (PFN) will collaborate with Japan’s National Institution of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Osaka University, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), RIKEN and MTI Ltd. (MTI) to provide high-precision weather forecasts to visitors and staff of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan which will be held between April 13 and October 13, 2025.

Through the collaboration, the 6 parties will use: Two of NICT’s Multi-Parameter Phased-Array Weather Radars (MP-PAWRs) operated by Osaka University to monitor the weather; NIED’s technology to predict rainfall based on the 3D data from the MP-PAWRs; PFN’s AI-based Cumulon platform to compress, transmit and decode the weather data, RIKEN’s Fugaku supercomputer to forecast precise scales and locations of rain between August 5 – 31 (planned); and MTI’s 3D Amagumo Weather mobile app to notify visitors and staff of possible heavy rain showers above the rate of 30 millimeters per hour.
